A topic that often arises at our Performance Measurement Forum meetings is outsourcing: that is, whether or not firms should consider outsourcing some or all of their performance measurement function, what firms are outsourcing, and what’s the experience been. Performance measurement outsourcing has been with us for over a decade, and there have been a growing number of firms who’ve considered and/or implemented it.
When I met with legendary investor and Batterymarch co-founder Dean LeBaron more than 25 years ago, he mentioned how if he could, he’d get rid of all of his own software (his firm was well known for what they crafted), and focus solely on investing, because that’s what they got paid for. I suspect he might have said the same thing about his performance measurement department, had outsourcing been an option at the time.
Clearly, outsourcing isn’t for everyone, and outsourcing isn’t necessarily a panacea. However, it is an option that many think has value.
