Bacon vs. Spaulding … the time has come for a showdown!
Carl Bacon, CIPM is a well known figure in the world of performance and risk measurement. And over the years, he and I have engaged in a few discussions covering a variety of topics. This has included a few “Battle Royales” at our annual PMAR conferences.
We tend not to agree on very much. This fact was the basis for my first “interesting man” graphic I composed last year:
Why battle?
It occurred to me several months ago that there was enough “material” for us to debate about, that we could set an entire day aside for it. I proposed the idea to Carl, and he agreed.
Right now we’re set to go 15 rounds, though a 16th is in the works. We will cover a variety of topics, and touch on just about every area of performance and risk measurement.
We see this as a great learning opportunity. Attendees will gain even greater knowledge about much of what we do, be exposed to many additional insights, as well as discover alternative ideas and views.
McGregor vs. Mayweather like?
I cannot deny that the idea was partly inspired by last year’s fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather. (Recall that the American won, and it’s likely that this will be the result, again.)
While these “rounds” will be a series of debates, covering various topics, they will be run in a manner similar to a boxing match: that is, each will be judged. And who might the judges be? The audience members, of course! They will mark their cards for each round, awarding a victory to one of us, or, a draw, if no clear victor has prevailed.
While we have set topics identified, our final round will address questions posed by audience members.

The battle will take place twice: first, in Philadelphia (May 17) and then in London (June 13). Both battles will follow their respective PMAR conference.
We guarantee that attendees will not only learn a great deal, they’ll also have some fun. We are so sure of this, that we will offer a money-back guarantee, if you’re not completely satisfied with your investment.
